Fallas de San Jose is a week-long festival held in Valencia, Spain, from March 12 to March 19.Its origins may be traced back to medieval times, when the carpenters’ guild (of which Joseph was the patron saint) built a massive bonfire out of the wood shavings that had gathered during the winter. This was marked the end of winter and the last night that candles and lamps had to be lit. The carpenters, in particular, often burned the parot, or wooden candelabrum, in front of their shops. In Valencia today, the parots have evolved into fallas, or massive floats with elaborate scenes made of wood and papier-mâché, satirizing everything from the high cost of life to political figures. The fallas parade down the streets on St. Joseph’s Day, March 18. The festival ends at midnight on March 19 with a grand ceremony known as the crema, in which all of the fallas are set on fire.St. Joseph’s Day is a big holiday for Sicilian Catholics residing in the
United States, similar to St. Patrick’s Day for Irish-Americans. This is particularly true in New Orleans, Milwaukee, and other cities with sizable Sicilian communities. On St. Joseph’s Day, a tradition similar to the Hispanic POSADAS takes place in Southern California: children reenact Mary and Joseph’s hunt for refuge by traveling from house to house seeking accommodation for the night. They are welcomed by a massive St. Joseph’s Altar and an elaborate meal as they arrive at the third building.
